Present State of Content Writing in India : Key Challenges and Opportunities
In comparison to global markets, the state of content writing in India is certainly not that impressive. Although this field has much potential and many students of premier universities are taking up content writing as a part-time job, that is it.
Very few people are there who take up content writing as a full-time job, primarily because "writing" as a full-fledged career remains outside the Indian society's cognition. Parents do not encourage their children to take up writing as a full-time job unless they are already established, writers.
However, their apprehensions are not entirely baseless. Content writing in India has a long way to go. It is because:
1. Lack of Awareness
The digital space is still not that pervasive in India. Consequently, most people do not know about what exactly content writing is.
Lack of professional credibility: Most content writers in India are amateurs. If you ask them how they entered into this field, they will either state their passion for writing or give the usual answer, "it just happened" (just like me).
Not that lucrative pay: As most content writers are amateurs, and without the qualification that is specific to this field, the content writing job as a whole suffers from quality deterioration in India. Consequently, it generates less payout and is considered less attractive as a career option.
2. Lack of information
Accountability is at the heart of any kind of writing. Whether it is about writing a book, a research paper, or any other content. Consequently, writing needs a lot of research which in turn requires the availability of information. In developed countries, it is the hiring company that furnishes different sources of information to its writers for responsible writing. However, in India, the onus is on the writers to do everything, including hunting for the right sources of information.
3. Lack of career growth
So far, India is concerned, content writers have only two ranks- writer and then editor. That is it. There is no scope for horizontal expansion as well, due to the lack of academic-professional correlation.
However, one should not forget that content writing is an emerging industry in India. Therefore, such kinds of challenges are inevitable. But that does not imply that there is no hope for content writing in India. These are some of the significant factors that are likely to contribute to the content writing industry's growth in India.
1. Rise in Popularity of the Digital Space
The ever-growing popularity of the digital space in India is indicative of the growing demand for good content. Consequently, the coming days will provide content writers with many new fields to explore.
2. Spread of MNCs
Multi-national corporations are always in search of new markets, and fresh content is essential for them to strike the target audiences. So, the demand for good content writers is bound to rise.
3. Rise of Freelancing Platforms and Digital Payments
Digital payments and online freelancing platforms are on the rise in India. While freelancing platforms will help Indian content writers to connect to global clients, digital payments like PayPal will allow them to enjoy the monetary rewards they deserve.
